7 Ways to Find Superstar Employees for Your Startup

Startup Hiring Tips for Growing Your Business

It’s a sign that your startup is flourishing when you need more hands on deck but where do you start? These startup hiring tips will help you find the best talent for your growing business.

Is your startup business starting to pick up some real momentum?

If so, you’re probably finding that you can’t take care of all the tasks that need to be done for you to succeed anymore. It’s a clear sign that it’s time to bring some new employees on board to lend a hand.

But before you begin startup hiring, you should make it a point to track down superstar employees who will add real value to your business rather than dragging it down. You want people you can trust to execute your vision, not people who are just looking for a paycheck every two weeks.

Here are 7 ways to find superstar employees for your startup.

1. Figure Out What You and Your Startup Need Help With Right Now

Before you start looking around for superstar employees to join your company, it’s important for you to decide what you’re actually going to need those employees to do.

Do you need help putting together a better website for your business? Do you need help developing a product or a service? Do you need help communicating with customers and keeping them happy?

By asking yourself these kinds of questions, you’ll be able to assess what kinds of employees you’ll need to hire. You want to make sure you’re hiring people who can perform the types of tasks you need to be completed.

2. Create a List of Job Positions You Want to Fill

Once you know what you need help with, you can start creating a list of job positions you want to fill. Try and be as specific as you possibly can when coming up with job titles that you’re going to give to your new superstar employees.

If the job titles you come up with are too vague, you’re likely going to attract candidates who aren’t qualified to work at your startup. Descriptive titles will let people know exactly what you’re expecting employees to do when they work for you.

3. Put Together Job Listings Specific to Each of the Positions

After you’ve come up with a list of positions you’re interested in filling, it’ll be time for you to write job listings for each of them.

In these listings, you should include everything a person will be required to do if you hire them to be a part of your company in a certain role. Since you’re a startup company, you’re probably going to need them to do quite a few things during the average workday.

Don’t be afraid to list out each and every responsibility that a person will have if they make it through your startup hiring process. The last thing you want is for a person to accept a job with your company, only for you discover later that they aren’t capable of doing certain things you need them to do.

The people who decide to apply for a job with your startup should be 100 percent qualified for the position they’re applying for.

4. Ask Interested Candidates to Prove They’re Right for Those Positions

At this point, those interested in working for your startup will begin to apply for the positions you want to fill.

Look through the job applications you receive and narrow your search down to the candidates you like most. Set up interviews with them and speak with the candidates about why they think they’re a good fit for your startup.

But don’t stop there!

In addition to interviewing candidates, ask them to perform some kind of task related to the job they want to get. For example, ask a software developer to come up with an idea for software that will benefit your business. Or ask a website designer to create a sample home page for your company’s new website.

By taking this approach, you’ll give yourself a much better idea of what each candidate brings to the table. The cream should start to rise to the top, with the superstars showing what they’re able to do.

5. Search for Candidates Who Have Skills in More Than One Area

Since you’re a startup, you’re probably not going to be hiring more than a few employees at the beginning. That means your employees will likely have to help out in more than just their designated area.

If possible, look for candidates with experience and skills in more than one area. A software developer who can also interact with customers or a website designer who can also create content for a site should be given priority over those who only excel in one area.

6. Administer 5 Panel Drug Tests to Candidates Before Offering Jobs

You’ve narrowed down your list of potential job candidates. You’ve interviewed them all and asked them to show you what they can do. You’ve even found a few who can really go above and beyond for your startup business.

It’s almost time to make a few hires.

But before you do, consider administering a 5-panel drug test to each candidate. A company like Rapid Detect can provide you with the drug tests you’ll need to do this.

7. Hire the Best Employees for Your Startup Business

At the end of the day, you should know which job candidates will work best for your startup business. You should feel their commitment when you talk to them and know they’re the right people for the positions you need to fill.

If, at any point, you’re unsure about a candidate or don’t think someone is going to pan out, pull the plug and go back to square one. It’s better to go through the startup hiring process again rather than hiring the wrong people to work for your company.

Effective Startup Hiring Can Help Your Business to Grow Even More

The process of startup hiring should be exciting, not daunting. It’s an indication that your business is headed in the right direction.

Take your time when hiring new employees for your startup and search high and low for the best candidates. You’ll be glad you did later when you have a roster full of superstars playing for your team.
