VirtualBox vs VMware: Which to Choose for 2020?

Windows is the most popular operating system for desktop computers. The trouble is, some programs will only run on macOS. Or you might prefer something a little more lightweight, like Linux.

Trying to decide which OS to use shouldn’t be a problem. With virtualization software, you can run multiple operating systems on the same computer.

Two of the biggest names in this field are VirtualBox and VMware. But which is best?

Read on for our VirtualBox vs VMware comparison.

What Is Virtualization Software?

Virtualization software is an application that allows you to run one operating system right from within another.

For example, if you use a Mac, virtualization software will allow you to run Windows on that Mac. It’s also possible to set up a dual boot system that lets you decide which operating system to load when you power up your computer, but virtualization software allows you to switch between operating systems without the need to power down.

VMware vs VirtualBox

These are two of the most popular options out there. Both have their pros and cons, so which should you choose in 2020? Let’s break it down a little.

Features

VMware offers a wide range of different products, including virtualization software, but also products such as VMware Cloud. In comparison, VirtualBox is all about virtualization.

Both providers offer software for Windows, Mac, and Linux. With VMware, the products confusingly have different names although they do the same thing.

If you’re looking for virtualization software for gaming, then VMware is your best bet; it supports Direct X 10 so you can handle 3D graphics much better. VMware is also more capable of handling CAD applications and other graphics-heavy apps.

For general use, both VirtualBox and VMware make using a different OS a breeze, with VirtualBox being a more lightweight option that may be better if you’re using an older machine.

If you’re not looking to use software that requires serious graphics grunt, then both options can do a good job.

Price

This is where there’s a more noticeable difference.

VirtualBox is completely free. That’s right, you don’t have to pay a thing for fully-functioning virtualization software. VMware does have some free options, but if you want the full package, you’re going to need to pay for it.

You might find that the additional features of VMware make it more than worth the price. If you’re still undecided, you can try out VirtualBox for free, and if it doesn’t meet your requirements, then give VMware a try.

VirtualBox vs VMware: Which One Wins?

Picking a winner in the VirtualBox vs VMware fight really depends on what you’re looking for.

If you want something that can handle graphics-intensive apps, then VMware is probably your best bet. If the price is the most important factor in your decision, then VirtualBox is a no brainer.
