How to Start a Bakery: These Are the Key Steps to Take

Did you know that chocolate chip cookies are one of the most popular desserts in America? Ever since they were invented in 1930, the recipe has become a classic.

If you’re a fan of cookies and other baked goods, then you should consider making a business out of it.

Are you wondering what key steps you need to take when starting your very own bakery? Keep reading to learn all about how to start a bakery.

1. Decide on the Type of Bakery

If you want to start a bakery, you’ll first have to decide on what kind of bakery you’d like to have. Some bakeries, for instance, exist online, except for the kitchen, of course. Other bakeries allow customers to pick up orders from a counter or even sit down and eat like in a restaurant.

If you want to focus on one specific kind of baked good, then it might be best to start a specialty service that can accept orders online, in-store, or both. You could even buy a food truck.

2. Determine the Menu

When it comes to starting a bakery, the type of baked goods you sell will make or break your business. This is why it’s important to look into baked goods that are popular.

However, it’s always best to offer at least one unique item that a customer can’t get anywhere else. In addition, you shouldn’t be afraid to try and improve classic recipes.

3. Find a Location

Although the end results will be worth it, opening a bakery isn’t going to be a picnic.

If you want a brick-and-mortar store, you’re going to have to scout out the perfect location. The best locations often have the highest rent, though, so keep that in mind if you need to stick to a budget. You should also keep in mind how many other bakeries are nearby.

4. Jump Through the Legal Hoops

Are you still wondering how to start your own bakery? Don’t forget that you’ll have to do quite a bit of paperwork to make your business official.

After you find a location, you’ll need to get insurance from a reliable place, such as PolicySweet.

You’ll also have to get a general business license, an employee identification number (EIN), a uniquely registered business name, and more.

5. Spread the Word

If you want to know how to open a bakery, you’ll have to start working on a marketing plan. Social media is one of the best tools to get the word out there without spending a ton of money.

Other than social media, you should have an official website that lists your products, allows customers to order with ease, and features a regular and high-quality blog.
